European Parliament passes new copyright rules

New copyright rules have been passed by the European Parliament in Brussels overnight, making Internet publishers liable for content that is uploaded by users.

The European Parliament has voted to pass its copyright rules, with 438 members voting for and 226 against, while 39 members abstained.

The European Parliament has voted against proposals to begin talks to update copyright laws for the digital age, with the parliament's plenary voting 318-278, with 31 abstentions, overnight to reject the negotiating mandate that had been proposed by its legal affairs committee on 20 June.
